A Sweet Day at the Children's Museum of Tacoma
Share
We wrapped up AANHPI Heritage Month with our very first event of its kind at the Children’s Museum of Tacoma—and we’re still smiling about it. A HUGE fa’afetai tele lava to all the beautiful families who came out to celebrate Samoan culture with stories, art, and connection. Whether you came specifically to be with us or found us while exploring the museum, thank you. It means so much to share space with you, and we’re always honored when folks take the time to talk story with us.
We started with a reading of Masina i le La, followed by Faitau Pi, where the kids happily repeated back the Samoan alphabet. Then we paused for an art workshop led by the amazing Dalcetta Palepale. The collage craft she created was absolutely gorgeous—tapa-inspired prints, tissue paper, and images from our Faitau Pi: The Samoan Alphabet book. The children loved it and dove right in, creating their own unique masterpieces.
After an hour of crafting, we came back together to read our affirmation book. Hearing the kids repeat each affirmation out loud was the sweetest thing. And in classic toddler fashion, when we asked if they wanted to try saying them in Samoan, one small voice yelled out a very loud “NO!”—which had everyone cracking up. It was such a real and funny moment.
Clingy toddlers, creative chaos, and all—it was a heart-filling day. We’re so thankful to Dalcetta for showing up with her full heart, and to the whole team at Greentrike and the Children’s Museum of Tacoma for having us.
Now that we’ve gotten a feel for this, we’d love to do more readings and workshops soon. We have so many ideas swirling. Until next time—manuia le aso, and thank you for letting us be part of yours. 💛
